The oldestmountains after dark
Straddling the border of North Carolina and Tennessee, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most biodiverse region in the United States. Named for the bluish haze that settles over its ridges, the Smokies derive their mist from the respiration of millions of trees — releasing fine droplets of vapor that blur mountain and sky. The range itself is among the oldest on Earth, over 200 million years in the making.

At dusk, the forest transforms: wood smoke mingles with the scent of pine and damp leaves, fireflies flicker through the understory, and the air cools with an almost tactile stillness. The Smokies embody the deep, resonant quiet of the Appalachian landscape — a timeless interplay of mountain, mist, and memory.
The composition
Appalachian Nocturne begins at dusk in the Great Smoky Mountains. Pepper and whiskey flare against cool night air before cedarwood and pine emerge at the heart. Incense, cocoa, and resins deepen the fragrance, leaving the impression of firelight fading on the ridge.
Ignition
Pink and black pepper ignite immediately: sharp, electric, present. Clove and cinnamon bark follow close behind, darker and more complex, like kindling catching. A mellow whiskey note rounds the whole opening, adding a honeyed depth that keeps the spice from reading as harsh. This is a fire being lit.

The forest
The heart is an Appalachian woods accord anchored in Virginia cedarwood, linear, clean, precise, and deepened by pine and cypress. Geranium and clary sage bring herbaceous lift, a cool green clarity that keeps the composition from turning heavy. The effect is a forest revealed under moonlight: dark shapes and cold air.
The embers
Incense and dark cocoa drape over a base of rich resins and earthy patchouli. Deep, smoldering, specific: the smell of cooling embers, damp mountain air, and the sweetness that lingers in smoke long after the fire has gone down. This is the drydown that carries everything before it, the ode to America’s oldest mountains.
Appalachian Nocturne is part of the first Neue Terra collection, composed by Ashley Santiago and made in California.
